This years winetasting promises to delight the most discerning winedrinkers. Wines will be available for purchase at Feria by the bottle, case, and half-case. Great for gifts and remembering Feria year round.
Ars Mácula, 2003
70% Cabernet Sauvignon / 30% Merlot, Denominación de Origen (D.O.) Navarra
$25 per bottle / $125 per half-case plus sales tax
Hailing from the Navarra D.O. tucked away in Spain’s northern reaches, this very personal wine created by Pedro Jesús and Angel Lizárraga (father and son) expresses the character and soil of the Yerri Valley. With its intense Morella cherry color, Ars Mácula entices with a very complex nose, cassis, mint, thyme, and a balsamic souvenir. Also, roasted and smoky hints of chocolate. On the palate this offering shows a large array of sensations: forest, terrior, stones, etc. Thick and powerful with an excellent backbone.
Parvus, 2004
Syrah, D.O. Alella
$22 per bottle / $115 per half-case plus sales tax
The Alella wine producing region, one of the smallest D.O. regions in Spain, is located to the north of Barcelona and covers an area of around 500 hectares of sea coast and sloping hills. Well known in Roman times, wines from Alella ultimately became a favorite of the Barcelona Bishopric in the Middle Ages. Our Parvus selection displays a deep dark ruby color. Integrated and complex nose with hints of cedar and tobacco against a background of berry fruit with spice, blackpepper and cooked raspberry accents. Medium bodied, Parvus is smooth and elegant with additional hints of vanilla underlining a solid core of ripe fruit.
Conde de Valdemar Reserva, 2002,
85% Tempranillo / 15% Mazuelo, D.O. La Rioja
$20 per bottle / $220 per case plus sales tax
This classic selection from Spain’s renowned La Rioja D.O. is made almost entirely from the Tempranillo grape. The Tempranillo varietal is believed to be a variant of France’s Pinot Noir that was brought to Spain by pilgrims during the Crusades. This grape has since been planted throughout Spain, but thrives particularly well in La Rioja. Conde de Valdemar Reserva indeed qualifies as a “High Expression” Rioja as the Martínez Bujanda family continues to push the envelope of classic Rioja wines with their fresh, fruit-driven style. This pick boasts a bright cherry color with sweet vanilla, cedar, and spice on the nose. Rich and mouth filling, this outstanding Reserva is balanced by excellent acidity, medium tannins, and a long silky finish.
Lanius, 2005
Pansa Blanca, Chardonnay, Viogner, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, D.O. Alella
$34 per bottle / $195 per half-case plus sales tax
As our showcase white offering for Feria 2008, this bottle should be reserved for only the most noble of occasions. Lanius is a dry white wine produced primarily with Pansa Blanca, a grape variety typical of the D.O. Alella, one of the oldest and smallest D.O.s in Spain. Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also used in the blend to increase the aromatic complexity and structure of the wine. According to Wine Spectator Online (May 2007), “This white is soft and full on the palate, with peach, almond and light butter scotch flavors. A great aperitif”.
Solar de la Vega, 2006
100% Verdejo, D.O. Rueda
$9 per bottle / $105 per case plus sales tax
This modern white wine is one of the more exciting offerings from the uber trendy Rueda D.O. (See NY Times article from March 5, 2008….”Rueda is yet another region to emerge triumphantly in the rebirth of the Spanish wine industry after the fall of Franco….”) Aroma: expressive, floral nose with hints of green apple and fennel. Taste: fresh and crisp with flavors of pink grapefruit, green apple, and bright citrus. Pair this refreshing white wine with shellfish, oysters, salads with vinaigrette, and baked or grilled fish entrées.
Pedro Ximénez, Bodegas Dios Baco
D.O. Jerez de la Frontera
$18 per bottle
Finally a Sherry offering at Feria! This premium pick is aged 34 years and is full-bodied and rich. It shows raisin, plum, and date aromas in a powerful bouquet. The mouth feel is velvety and smooth, but is well-balanced with acidity and therefore lighter than expected. Loaded with sweet, almost honeyed fruit flavors, the finish is lengthy and clean. Excellent by itself or as an accompaniment to dessert or a cigar, this Jerez dances from the glass.
